PENDANG, July 10 — A teenager was killed while his elder brother survived after they were hit by a falling coconut tree at Jalan Air Putih, Sungai Tempoyak, here during a storm today.
Ilyas Ahmad Siddiq Abu Hasan, 17, and his brother Mohd Izmer, 20, were on their way back to their home in Kampung Kubang Kuar, Mukim Air Putih at noon on a motorcycle after fishing at a canal in Kampung Tempoyak when the incident happened.
“We went out to fish at 9am, and decided to return home because of heavy rain and strong winds. I was riding the motorbike and told my brother we should pass through Kampung Tempoyak as it was much closer, but my brother insisted we use Jalan Air Putih instead.
“As soon as we reached the area, a coconut tree fell and hit my brother on his head and shoulders, which led him to become unconscious with a lot of blood oozing out of his ear. I did not experience any injury even though I was dragged (along the path),” Mohd Izmer told reporters when met at his home.
Mohd Izmer said he then started screaming for help and some villagers who were nearby helped him lift the coconut tree and take his brother to a house nearby.
“People helped move my brother to a safe place, but he was unconscious. I immediately contacted my father Abu Hasan Mohamad, 57, and when my father arrived at the scene, he called the ambulance, and they confirmed that my brother was dead.
“His body was taken to the Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, and he will be buried at the Masjid Tempoyak cemetary after Asr prayers today,” he said.
Mohd Izmer said his brother was in a happy mood yesterday after their sister, Syuhada, 23, had bought him a new purple shirt to wear on Aidilfitri, but unfortunately, he did not live to wear the clothes.
Meanwhile, a spokesman from the regional police headquarters confirmed the incident. — Bernama
