LABUAN, June 5 — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake that hit the Ranau district in Sabah early this morning caused a tremor in the duty-free island here.

The Financial Park Complex, where most government department and agency offices are being housed, was shaken several minutes before 8am for a few seconds, causing hundreds of staff to run down for safety.

Labuan Fire and Rescue safety officer Ahmad Azmer said the department received a distress call at about 8.08am and immediately rushed to the complex which is also partly a shopping complex.

Checks on the building revealed that it was safe for occupation despite the tremor, he said in a statement.
