YAN, April 24 ― The enforcement of the Sedition Act 1948 is adequate against controversial blogger Alvin Tan who again insults Islam by making fun of the call to prayers, recently.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said although the Malaysian Islamic Development Department and Syariah Court are responsible on issues involving Islam, the action that could also be taken is based on the respective state religious councils.

“Jakim is only a religious secretariat, but if the insulting of Islam is perpetrated by non-muslims, it is beyond the power of the Syariah Court, but we see there are areas of jurisdiction available (for such cases) with the relevant authorities in the country.

“He cannot insult, regardless of religion. The Sedition Act is actually enough to to curb (Alvin Tan), as we want to see our country peaceful and respected with no controversies and sensitivities,” he told reporters after a ceremony to hand over allowances for the Jerai Parliament Village Development And Security Committee here, today.

Today, several mufti were of the opinion that the time has come the Islamic laws in the country were amended, updated and applicable for non-Muslims who committed offences involving the purity of Islam.

As such, they said firm action should be taken against Alvin Tan for uploading a video recording on YouTube containing him singing the azan in R&B rhythm while playing keyboard.

However, Jamil said all these views were taken into account for the peace and stability of this country. ― Bernama
