RANTAU PANJANG, Jan 2 ― The Youth and Sports Ministry will let the police fully investigate the shooting of Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) vice-president (VP) Datuk Noorul Ariffin Abdul Majid and not make assumptions regarding the motive, said its minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

“For now we do not know (why he was shot), we cannot suspect anyone although I admit MAF can be a political minefield,” he told Bernama after handing over flood aid to members of the Siamese community in Kampung Teresek here today.

In the 10pm incident on Wednesday, Noorul Ariffin, a former national hurdler, was shot twice in his right leg in a drive-by shooting in front of his house in Bandar Rahman Putra Sungai Buloh, when he got down from his car after performing prayers at a nearby surau.

He has been hospitalised at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre in Petaling Jaya.

Sungai Buloh police chief Supt Junaidi Bujang had said that the victim had received a death threat the day before.

A local English daily today carried a report quoting MAF insiders that the shooting was linked to his election as VP of MAF. ― Bernama
