CAMERON HIGHLANDS, Nov 10 — The water level at the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam in Lembah Bertam here was reported to be at the normal level of 3,499 metres as of 10.30am today.

Cameron Highlands District Police Chief, DSP Wan Zahari Wan Busu said although there were intermittent heavy rains since Saturday afternoon, the water level at the dam remained at a stable level.

“On November 5 (Wednesday), the water level at the dam was recorded at 3,509 metres, in the dangerous category.

“The situation at the dam now is reported to be normal, however the Fire and Rescue Department and the Tenaga Nasional Berhad is monitoring the situation and the residents will be informed earlier if there is a second release of water,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

In the incident which occurred at 6.30pm last Wednesday, residents along Sungai Bertam near here were ordered to be evacuated when water from the Sultan Abu Bakar dam was released in stages because the level had risen following the heavy rain.

Ringlet town was also hit by flash floods when water from nearby rivers overflowed the banks following an hour-long heavy rain.

In the incident, five people were killed while five more were injured. — Bernama
