PETALING JAYA, Oct 1 — Klang Valley banks have beefed up security after huge sums of money were taken out illegally via high-tech methods from automated teller machines (ATM).

Malay Mail yesterday surveyed several banks and discovered their security teams were on high alert.

Banks in Kota Damansara, Dataran Sunway and Petaling Jaya, hit on Monday, had increased security personnel to ensure they do not fall victims again.

A branch manager of RHB Bank in Kota Damansara, who declined to be identified, said since the thefts were discovered the banks have been directed by their headquarters to step up security.

Another bank nearby had also taken similar steps to strengthen security.

“We will provide the night shift guards with fire arms to protect the machines,” said a spokesman of OCBC Bank in Dataran Sunway.

At Alliance Bank in Dataran Sunway, a guard was seen at the bank’s entrance and where the ATM machines were.

The thieves, described to be of Latin American descent, had struck three Al-Rajhi Bank branches and a Bank Islam branch in Kota Damansara and Dataran Sunway on Monday.
