GEORGE TOWN, Feb 11 — The management committee of an apartment complex in Batu Ferringhi has dismissed allegations that untreated human waste from the complex flows straight into Sungai Batu Ferringhi.

Its chairman, Ronnison Paul, said the apartment had been using a septic tank system for the past 30 years.

“It has been functioning well so far in both the blocks here,” he said.

Paul said the tanks were regularly serviced and monitored.

He said no complaints had been filed to the committee regarding the issue, contrary to the claims made by a resident.

The resident alleged that the sewage from the apartments was discharged into the drain, partly contributing to the emergence of black effluence in Sungai Batu Ferringhi.

Penang Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry had instructed the Department of Environment to investigate the claims.

“After the residents submitted copies of police reports to the ministry, it ordered the department to look into the matter,” he said.
