Fire destroys fishing boat at jetty

LANGKAWI, Aug 9 — Fire destroyed a fishing boat, causing damage estimated at RM1 million at the Bukit Malut jetty here today.

In the incident which occurred about 2.10pm, a man who helped to douse the flames sustained slight injuries and was warded at the Langkawi Hospital.

According to Langkawi Fire and Rescue Department chief Yaakob Hassan, the boat which was used to fish for anchovies, was anchored at the jetty as its crewmen were celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

He said firemen faced difficulties in putting out the blaze as the boat was about 20 metres from a fire engine which was despatched to the scene.

He said fishing nets, as well as the boat’s engine and equipment were gutted. – Bernama
