PARIS, Jan 28 — At the latest edition of the Maison & Objet interior design and decoration trade fair in Paris, Italian design brand Seletti — known for its irreverent creations — presented a new collection of porcelain tableware, including cups and plates.
In Japan, the term “kintsugi” describes a specific technique used to repair ceramics. Rather than reaching for the superglue, this artisanal technique involves using a special kind of lacquer mixed with powdered gold (or silver or platinum) to stick the pieces back together.
Repaired items therefore have golden veins, celebrating their cracks with eye-catching shine rather than trying to conceal them.
Italian designer Marcantonio has created a new collection of porcelain tableware for Seletti, called “Kintsugi,” inspired by the technique. The plates, cups and small bowls in the collection are all made from several ceramic fragments from different services, joined together with 24-carat gold. This ensures each piece a unique and highly precious look.
Marcantonio Raimondi Malerba — better known as Marcantonio — is a long-standing contributor to Seletti's catalog. His work often explores connections between mankind and nature. His previous creations for the famous Italian design brand include the “Mouse Lamp” and the “Monkey Lamp.”
