LONDON, Feb 24 — London Fashion Week was drawing to a close Monday night, but amid the heavy smoke and gilded mirrors of Annabel’s, the legendary Mayfair club, the fun had only just begun.

An hour after the last model stomped off the catwalk at the Burberry show in nearby Soho, Katie Grand, the stylist and Love magazine editor-in-chief, opened the doors to a no-holds-barred party in celebration of the latest cover of her magazine.

Grand said she and her team had found themselves hankering for new faces, so they issued an open casting call via social media for the project — which then was photographed by the model Kendall Jenner in the Mojave Desert. A total of 110,000 people applied.

“We picked just 25 girls and guys in the end, and most of them are here tonight,” said Grand, wearing a cream-coloured Prada mac with fluffy marabou-feather sleeves.

“They are all staying together in a massive Airbnb nearby and having a pretty wild time.”

She added that the choice of party location was particularly poignant: It would be the last party at Annabel’s original Berkeley Square site; the club is moving to a larger site elsewhere on the square.

The subterranean lair, full of mirrored bars and shadowy alcoves and with a starlit dance floor, has hosted everyone from rock stars to royalty over the last 50 years (rumor has it Annabel’s was the only nightclub ever visited by Queen Elizabeth II). Also fashion people, of course.

“It’s the end of an era isn’t it? All the really memorable fashion parties have been held here at Annabel’s — this Annabel’s,” said Grand, smashed up against the bar and elbow-to-elbow with guests as cameras flashed away. “Thank goodness these walls can’t talk.”

If they could, they might have mentioned the young designers and industry darlings Matty Bovan and Charles Jeffrey pumping out ‘80s hits from the decks for the farewell event. British designers including Christopher Bailey, Jonathan Saunders and Nicholas Kirkwood chatted with friends nearby, while the singer Ellie Goulding whispered intensely with her ex, Dougie Poynter, for most of the night. The new catwalk star Lennon Gallagher brooded with several of his mates. And the army of bow-tied barmen could barely keep up with the relentless demand for Champagne, cheese straws and smoked-salmon blinis.

And that was before the army of supermodels descended. A pouting Jenner, Grand’s co-hostess, sat sporting a giant white sculpted Burberry hoodie and posing with Bella Hadid and Stella Maxwell in one corner. Erin O’Connor and Helena Christensen lounged in another. And Anna Cleveland, daughter of Pat Cleveland, burned up the dance floor with wild (and slightly terrifying) abandon.

“Everyone wants to let their hair down before the circus moves on to Milan, but the British really do have a proper knack for it,” said Winnie Harlow, barely clad in Marc Jacobs, surveying the scene.

The model, rumored to be dating the rapper Drake, recently moved to London and walked in several shows this season, including Fashion East and Julien Macdonald.

“It’s fun to be out,” she said.

“Most nights for me here aren’t nearly as exciting as people would like to think. I mainly just stay in and order delivery.” — The New York Times
