SINGAPORE, Nov 12 — The National Library Board (NLB) recently launched a new app as part of its Reading On The Move initiative.
The app, called NLB Mobile, is meant to make it easier for adults to do so.
“The enhanced NLB Mobile app was developed to streamline the library experience for all,” Siow Shong Seng, director of Technology & Service Innovation at the NLB.
“With this app, users will now be able to access our large collection of e-books, audio e-books and curated short reads during their commute, and have seamless access to other library content and services.”
Some of the new features of the app include bookmarking titles for future reference (in the mylibrary tab), registering for events at the libraries, and an enhanced social element, where library patrons can recommend titles to NLB for their consideration to include in the NLB collection.
As part of the launch, the NLB has provided one year unlimited downloads of travel books by Lonely Planet. A selection of other titles have a three-month unlimited access period: These include classic novels such as The Hobbit and The Life Of Pi, as well as non-fiction titles such as The Achievement Habit and Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built.
Also, NLB has increased the Overdrive e-book loans quota from the current six e-book loans per user to eight e-book loans per user. This is to keep it on par with the current physical books loan quota of eight titles under its basic membership scheme.
Siow said: “We hope that this added convenience will inspire more people to read anytime and anywhere so that together, we can work towards building a vibrant reading culture in Singapore.”
According to the NLB, Reading On The Move — which is part of its annual National Reading Movement programme — is meant to reach out to working adults to encourage them to read while on the go.
