NEW YORK, Aug 12 — In 2001, Gail Morris came home to find her 17-year-old son, Alex, had overdosed on heroin.

He survived, but was in a coma for six weeks. He awoke blind with no function in his arms or legs and couldn't speak.

Since then, his mother has become his full-time caretaker. — New York Times
