GEORGE TOWN, July 8 ― It is rich and creamy and most importantly, fragrant with the pungent Musang King aroma and every mouthful is like eating durian dipped in cheese.

This is “The King”, the aptly named durian cheesecake creation by well-known cheesecake experts Sunny Chang and Marcus Tan of Moody Cow Cafe.

This is no run-of-the-mill durian cheesecake but one that is so rich and thick, it is almost sinful digging into the large serving.

“All my cakes are double or triple baked due to the different layers and this durian cheesecake is no different as it has different layers,” he said.

The cake has a rich moist chocolate cake layer as the first layer before a layer of cheese is piled on and the last layer is that of the Musang King durians and cheesy concoction.

This results in a burst of rich durian flavours enhanced by a medley of light cheeses that is perfectly contrasted by the deeper flavours of the chocolate cake base.

The two-year-old cafe has now expanded with The Cheesecake Boutique, a shop lot adjoining it, to allow for a more private and cosy dining experience.

The Cheesecake Boutique is a section of private and cosy dining space that is furnished in a classical European style with comfortable plushy armchairs and sofas with grand chandeliers and dim soft lighting.

As is the cafe's signature, Chang comes up with new cheesecake flavours every few months; he has over 200 different cheesecake recipes under his belt.

Other than The King, there are Banana Lemon, Dreamer, Nightmare and Rich Choco Peanut among the latest offerings.

Banana Lemon is a delicate balance of bananas and the tanginess of lemons while Dreamer is a dream for chocolate lovers as it is a thick layer of moist dark chocolate cake, a layer of chocolate and then a layer of their signature rich cheesecake topped with chocolate ganache, crunchy walnuts and chocolate chips.

The Rich Choco Peanut and Nightmare are within the same series as Dreamer, both a combination of rich dark chocolate and cheesecake with peanut biscuits for the former and aromatic coffee for the latter.

The cafe also offers homemade pastas if cake is not your thing and a must-try has to be the Spicy Tuna Aglio Olio with large chunks of tuna and added spice from Mexican chillies.

Feeling guilty after the indulgence of cakes and pasta? Well, you can wash down the utterly rich and decadent meal with their healthy fruit juices such as Liquid Lunch, a combination of celery, carrot, apple and cucumber or smoothies like Tropical Storm, a combination of orange, banana, pineapple and yogurt.
