OREGON, Oct 13 — Jerry Greenfield, the co-founder of the Vermont ice cream maker, Ben & Jerry’s, is hoping to help sway the results of Oregon’s ballot initiative that would require food manufacturers to label products that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.

Greenfield traveled to Portland last week to unveil “Food Fight Fudge Brownie,” an update on the popular “Fudge Brownie” flavour, which is designed to draw attention to Measure 92.

“This flavour is only going to be available in Oregon scoop shops,” Greenfield said.

With just weeks to go until Measure 92 goes to the voters, the initiative is on track to become the most expensive in state history, the Oregonian reported.

Supporters of Measure 92 have spent US$4.5 million (RM14.656  million) to pass the initiative, while opponents, including food and biochemical manufacturers, have raised US$7 million to defeat it.

Oregon is one of two states with GMO-labeling measures on the November ballot. In Colorado, Proposition 105 would also require labels for any food product that contains genetically engineered ingredients. — Bloomberg
