GEORGE TOWN, Aug 31 — Things just don’t stop happening up here. Just as the George Town Festival draws to a close today after a month-long celebration of its UNESCO heritage status comes news of another big event taking place up here: the much-touted Asia Food Festival (AFF) 2014.

The first of its kind, and the biggest hospitality and F&B event ever to be held in Penang, this celebration of our “culinary cultural diversity” will be held from October 22-26 at the newly-revamped SPICE (Subterranean Penang International Convention & Exhibition Centre—formerly PISA) in Bayan Baru.

The festival, held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014 and organised by the Chefs Association of Malaysia Penang Chapter will also incorporate the 15th edition of the Battle of the Chefs.

Endorsed by the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS) as a recognised WACS international competition, this popular contest expects to see 1,500 chefs from around the world taking part in more than 65 categories.

It promises an interesting time for everyone, packed with exhibitions, talks, seminars and conferences, including daily prize draws for Star Cruises’ Penang-Phuket 4-day/3-night cruise on Superstar Libra.

“Citrarasa Malaysia”, co-hosted with the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia, will be held on October 24-25 where over 150 stalls featuring signature dishes from the different states, international food and of course Penang’s famous hawker fare will be showcased.

Co-hosts the Penang International Halal Hub will be organising a Penang Halal Conference, and there will be a Field Cooking Competition held by Malaysian Army personnel. Over 8,000-10,000 daily visitors are anticipated over the course of the five days.

The official launch of AFF 2014 was held last Thursday aboard the Superstar Libra by Star Cruises, one of the official sponsors for the event.

In his opening speech, organising chairman Chef Lee Chan Wai said, “Our key objective is to encourage the community within the F&B and culinary industry to create innovative ideas, events and build retail development opportunities. Furthermore, it also helps build relationships by providing the opportunity to meet key stakeholders of the F&B, hospitality and culinary industry.”
