BACHOK, May 3 — The government will continue to monitor suspicious offers related to badal haji services, particularly at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and on social media platforms.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the monitoring is being carried out continuously to ensure Malaysians do not fall victim to scams, especially at the last minute ahead of the Haj season.

“To date, no complaints have been received regarding badal haji fraud. Nevertheless, Tabung Haji has deployed personnel to monitor activities on social media as well as at KLIA.

“I advise Malaysians, particularly Muslims, to always refer to the relevant authorities to verify any offers or information and avoid potential losses,” he told reporters after officiating a Bakery and Pastry Business Empowerment Programme in Kampung Telong here today. Also present was Tabung Haji group managing director and chief executive officer Mustakim Mohamad.

Zulkifli noted that the cost of performing the Haj is high, and unrealistic offers may not fulfil the required pillars and obligations of the pilgrimage.

Earlier, Malaysian consul-general in Jeddah Tengku Mohd Dzaraif Raja Abdul Kadir also cautioned Malaysians against dubious badal haji services, particularly those offered at unusually low prices compared to actual costs.

Meanwhile, 30 women from the Kelantan Rehabilitation Centre for Persons with Disabilities took part in the programme to improve their skills and generate income by producing and selling their products. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Umno will adopt ‘out-of-the-box’ approaches, including non-verbal communication methods, to win over young voters who now form the majority in the country’s political landscape.

Its president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said this reality must be acknowledged, as voters below 40, including those under the Undi18 initiative, are more open-minded and no longer bound by party loyalty alone.

“They are very open in their thinking, and they do not necessarily choose parties. They choose candidates and those who can deliver agendas that matter to them, and what they stand to gain from the candidates they support,” he said in a special interview in conjunction with Umno’s 80th anniversary celebration here today.

Ahmad Zahid said the strategy is crucial as voting trends have shifted, with voters increasingly assessing candidates based on service delivery and personal credibility rather than the political party they represent.

On the 16th General Election (GE16), Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, did not rule out contesting solo but remained open to cooperation to avoid overlapping seats with parties in the Unity Government coalition.

The deputy prime minister said the current political reality makes it difficult for any single party or coalition to emerge dominant and form a government on its own without support from others.

“That is why I mentioned the possibility of going solo. It does not mean we reject cooperation. We may still work together to avoid seat overlaps even if we contest on our own. In this matter, we are not rejecting any coalition partners,” he said.

Reflecting on the hung Parliament situation following GE15, Ahmad Zahid described the formation of the Unity Government as a reality that must be accepted in the interest of national stability, despite initial perceptions surrounding the cooperation.

“Such a situation may arise again, and I do not see any coalition in GE16 becoming dominant enough to form a government on its own. That is a reality we must acknowledge,” he said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan plays a key role in easing the current administrative crisis in the Negeri Sembilan government, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said Mohamad, better known as Tok Mat, has consistently sought solutions through discussions with party leaders to defuse the situation.

As such, he said allegations linking Mohamad, who is also the member of parliament for Rembau, as the mastermind behind the crisis in Negeri Sembilan are unfair.

“Tok Mat Hasan is trying to find ways to resolve the issue. It is unfair to make such allegations against him. He frequently holds discussions and engages in discussions with me to find a solution.

“I also told him that ‘benang telah kusut’ (the thread has become tangled), and we know the cause. Therefore, we must carefully and gradually untangle it,” he said in an interview in conjunction with Umno’s 80th anniversary here today.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, was responding to allegations by certain parties claiming that Mohamad was the mastermind behind the political turmoil in Negeri Sembilan.

On Umno’s stance regarding the state’s administrative issue, Ahmad Zahid said the decision by 14 assemblymen was to remain with the Unity Government.

“There is no question of withdrawing to become the opposition. That has never been an issue. There may be interpretations or perceptions that they disagreed with the appointment of the menteri besar, but this must be viewed in a broader context,” he said.

The deputy prime minister said the appointment of the menteri besar is not decided by Umno alone, but depends on the consensus of coalition parties within the Unity Government, particularly Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Previously, 14 BN assemblymen withdrew their support for the state government led by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

However, Ahmad Zahid said on Thursday that all the assemblymen had agreed to continue supporting the state Unity Government to ensure stability.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Aminuddin would continue to carry out his duties as Menteri Besar as usual after receiving the consent of the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has ordered a full review of the SPM Moral Studies subject, stepping in after an outcry from parents and top-performing students whose university prospects are being jeopardised by unexpectedly poor grades in the paper.

Speaking at an event in Puchong today, Fadhlina acknowledged the “anxieties of parents and the community” and directed the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate to conduct the review.

She specifically thanked Sri Murugan Centre (SMC) director Surain Kanda for raising the issue, Free Malaysia Today reported.

“I have directed the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate to review and improve the subject,” she was quoted saying.

The review comes after reports that many high-achieving students received unexpectedly poor grades for the subject, potentially jeopardising their eligibility for matriculation programmes which often have stringent grade requirements.

According to Muda vice-president Siva Prakash, a former exam board manager, a key problem is the lack of transparency in how the paper is graded.

He explained that SPM grades are based on a moderation framework where grade boundaries are adjusted based on the student cohort’s performance, but these boundaries are not made public, leaving students and teachers in the dark.

At the same event, SMC’s Surain proposed that the Moral Studies exam should be an open paper using an “analytical marking” approach. He also criticised the grading threshold, calling the requirement to score 95 and above for an A+ “unreasonably high.”

Surain also urged the government to increase the number of matriculation placements for the Indian community to 2,500, without affecting the quotas for other communities.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed that the draft amendments to the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) Act be completed within three months.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the move includes streamlining Mara’s role as a key umbrella for the Bumiputera economy as well as a one-stop centre for development through better coordination of related agencies and policies.

He said emphasis would also be placed on governance to ensure the Bumiputera agency not only speaks up on key issues, but also demonstrates stronger commitment to good governance practices.

“In its 60 years, Mara has seen its ups and downs. There were times when governance issues were seen as weak and problematic. That is why I thank the Mara chairman for giving due attention to governance.

“I therefore expect the new Mara Act to be ready before the end of the year. I do not want to wait too long. There is no need to take seven to eight months…submit the draft to me within three months,” he said when speaking at the Mara 60th anniversary celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur here today.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Mara director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman.

The prime minister said the amendments are in line with one of the seven thrusts under the Mara 40-Year Vision, which is designed to position the institution as a key driver of a more inclusive, competitive and globally oriented Bumiputera economic development agenda.

He said the first thrust focuses on transforming Mara into a successful conglomerate anchored in education and entrepreneurship.

“The second emphasises the 3P approach - participation, ownership and control - to strengthen the economic foundation of the Bumiputera community.

“The third relates to talent development, including producing skilled and semi-skilled workers in line with evolving needs, particularly in sectors such as oil and gas and technologies like artificial intelligence (AI),” he said.

Anwar said the fourth thrust focuses on capital development for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to expand globally, including in the halal sector, while the fifth and sixth thrusts aim to position Mara as a one-stop centre for education, investment and entrepreneurship, as well as to penetrate international markets.

“And finally, the seventh focuses on governance, integrity and transparency, as we have consistently emphasised,” he said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Amendments to the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) Act 1966 will serve as a legal safeguard to ensure the Bumiputera empowerment agenda remains intact and is not altered with every change in national or organisational leadership.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the move is aimed at establishing a stronger governance framework and stricter regulations to ensure the agency’s direction remains consistent in upholding Bumiputera interests, free from political influence.

“We do not want Mara’s agenda to change simply because of a change in leadership. We want Mara to continue safeguarding the Bumiputera agenda regardless of who is in charge at any given time.

“I have set a deadline until the end of this year for the (draft amendments to the) Mara Act to be finalised and tabled in Parliament,” he said when speaking at the Mara 60th Anniversary Celebration here today, which was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said strengthening the act is crucial to closing loopholes and preventing fund leakages, as Mara currently carries a significant mandate with total assets amounting to RM23 billion.

He also aims for Mara to become a self-sustaining organisation capable of generating its own internal funds through strategic investments, without relying entirely on government allocations, by the time it reaches its 100th anniversary.

Earlier, Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, in his speech, said that the agency is now in the final phase of reviewing the Mara Act, which has been in place for six decades.

He said the move is aimed at establishing a stronger legal foundation to enhance governance and institutional management, ensuring the organisation maintains its integrity in the long term.

“The most important aspect we want to amend and lay the foundation for is to ensure that, although leaders may come and go, the core principles of governance and management are firmly in place so that misconduct, wastage and leakages can be properly prevented,” he said.

Asyraf Wajdi said the substance of the proposed amendments, along with the transformation plan, will be presented by Ahmad Zahid to the Prime Minister in the near future. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — The Bumiputera empowerment agenda has been pursued more assertively, firmly and boldly under the Madani Government over the past three years, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the approach demonstrates that the government does not subscribe to elitism at the expense of Bumiputera interests, as alleged by certain quarters.

He pointed to the government’s decision to grant automatic matriculation placement to students who obtain 10As regardless of race, while at the same time maintaining the existing quota for Bumiputera students.

“At the same time, 90 per cent of Bumiputera students continue to be given opportunities through the matriculation programme, reflecting the government’s inclusive approach.

“Therefore, in any debate, do not focus on one aspect alone without considering the policy in its entirety, and avoid creating the perception of a zero-sum game,” Anwar said when officiating Majlis Amanah Rakyat’s (Mara) 60th anniversary celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur here today. — Bernama

SIBU, May 3 — Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh has proposed that Sibu host an annual water music festival, saying the district is ready to embrace such initiatives amid controversy surrounding a similar event in Peninsular Malaysia.

In a statement, Wong expressed full support for Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing following objections raised against the Rain Rave Water Music Festival in the peninsula.

He said if certain politicians there could not accommodate such a creative and multicultural event, Sibu would be ready to welcome it with open arms.

Wong revealed he would formally engage with Tiong to explore the possibility of hosting a similar festival at Sibu Town Square and to propose making it a signature annual event under PDP and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), with the aim of positioning Sibu as a tourism and arts hub in central Sarawak.

The PDP senior vice-president said the recent uproar highlighted a stark contrast in cultural tolerance between East and West Malaysia.

“In West Malaysia, some politicians are quick to label artistic events and exploit division for political gain. But in Sarawak, our mindset is entirely different.

“We take pride in the ‘Sarawak model’ – a culture built on mutual respect, understanding, and inclusivity,” he said, referring to objections faced by the Rain Rave Water Music Festival, including pressure from conservative parties such as Umno and PAS.

He emphasised that Sarawak’s multi-ethnic communities have long coexisted harmoniously without resorting to extreme views that restrict others.

“This inclusivity is Sarawak’s most valuable asset and the ideal foundation for hosting international-scale events,” he said.

Wong also cited the success of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in Kuching, which attracts thousands of international visitors annually and has placed Sarawak on the global cultural map.

He said Sibu, enriched by the Rajang River and its deep cultural heritage, also deserves a vibrant, high-quality modern entertainment event.

“We should not always be spectators. It is time for Sibu to step forward. Through a water music festival, we can energise the local economy and unleash the creativity of our youth,” he said.

He stressed that the proposal to make the festival an annual PDP/GPS event was not about political promotion, but about delivering tangible economic benefits, including stimulating local industries such as food and beverage, hospitality, transport and retail.

Wong added that the festival could also foster unity across communities and help build Sibu’s brand identity as a centre for music and culture.

He reiterated his support for Tiong, commending his courage and vision in promoting Malaysia’s tourism diversity.

“Sarawakians will not be bound by extreme thinking. Through music, water, and joy, we will show the world what true unity and openness look like.

“Sibu’s potential must not remain hidden – we will unlock it together and let its name resonate across the globe,” he said. — The Borneo Post

KUCHING, May 3 — The community and netizens are urged to stop speculating on the alleged hit-and-run incident on Friday that killed a 56-year-old cyclist.

In making this call, Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng appealed to eye-witnesses to come forward with information to assist the investigation.

“While we hope that people could stop speculating and pinning blame, we also urge the culprit to come forward and own up,” he said during his Facebook live session ‘Shall WEE Talk’ on Saturday.

Wee noted that several social media comments had focused on who should be blamed. He stressed that this was not the time to point fingers but to show respect for the victim’s family.

“A family has lost a loved one. The community should show compassion rather than leaving comments questioning whether the cyclist used lights or why he went out early morning.

“If you’re the family involved, you would know how anguished these comments are,” he said.

The mayor added that such remarks were unfair to the family and reflected a lack of basic courtesy.

Wee emphasised that it was wrong for the culprit to leave the victim behind after the collision.

He said the culprit should stepped out of the vehicle to check on the victim’s condition and help seek medical attention instead of fleeing the scene.

“This should be our respect for life and our responsibility for what we have done.”

As of Saturday afternoon, he said no individual had come forward with information. Wee reiterated his call for witnesses to assist the authorities.

“We need the community to join forces and help the police gather more useful information to facilitate the investigation,” he said, expressing hope that the police could expedite the probe to provide a closure for the family and truth to the community.

On Friday morning, the cyclist was killed in a suspected hit-and-run incident in Jalan BDC here.

It was learnt that the victim was on the way to meet with friends for a cycling trip and was heading towards Saradise when a vehicle struck him and immediately fled the scene.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene confirmed that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.

Police have launched an investigation and are appealing to anyone with information on the incident to come forward and assist. — The Borneo Post

CHUKAI, May 3 — A man was killed while his two daughters were injured in an accident involving three vehicles at KM290 of the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2), near the Chukai Toll Plaza interchange here yesterday.

Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the victim, Rosli Yusuf, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe internal injuries in the incident, which occurred at 6.33 pm.

He said the victim’s two daughters, Auni Ukhratan Basyirah, 15, and Iliya Markisa Qurrata Aini, 23, sustained minor injuries and were taken to Kemaman Hospital for treatment.

“Initial investigations found that the accident involved a trailer carrying a load of bricks, a Mitsubishi Triton pick-up truck, and a sport utility vehicle (SUV),” he said when contacted today.

He added that the accident occurred when the driver of a trailer travelling in the left lane is believed to have lost control before ramming into the pick-up truck driven by the victim in the right lane.

He said that as a result of the collision, both vehicles crashed into the road divider before veering into the opposite lane.

At the same time, he said an SUV travelling in the opposite direction failed to avoid the crash and collided with the left side of the pick-up truck.

“The impact of the collision caused the trailer lorry to plunge into a ravine about three metres deep,” he said.

He added that at the time of the incident, the victim, who worked as an assistant technician, was travelling from Melaka to Kampung Payoh in Kemaman.

“The victim’s body has been taken to the Forensic Unit of Kemaman Hospital for a post-mortem, while his two daughters were treated as outpatients,” he said.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Barisan Nasional (BN) is “almost certain” to contest the next general election independently but must remain open to political understandings to avoid disastrous three-cornered fights, said chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In an interview with the New Straits Times, Umno president and deputy prime minister addressed the question of BN’s strategy for the 16th General Election, particularly its future with current unity government partner, Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“In the coming election, I am almost certain we will go solo,” Zahid said in the interview for Umno’s 80th anniversary.

“But we should not dismiss the need for an understanding with other party coalitions.”

He stressed the importance of learning from the 15th General Election, where multi-cornered fights between BN, PH, and Perikatan Nasional (PN) often split votes to PN’s advantage.

“We must avoid seat overlaps and three-cornered fights. That is the best approach,” he said, adding that specifics would be decided later.

This strategic flexibility also means BN will not be fielding candidates in all 222 parliamentary seats.

“I don’t think there is a need to do so. We will contest in seats where we believe our chances of winning are high,” Zahid explained.

He warned against making an emotional decision based purely on a desire to go solo, cautioning that such a miscalculation could be disastrous.

“We must be crystal clear on this matter. We should not rush into going solo to the extent that we dismiss all possibilities, only to end up ‘lost at sea’ once again,” he said.

Acknowledging a fluid political landscape, Zahid said BN must remain adaptable and open to new partnerships, including potential cooperation with PN, which recently indicated an openness to collaboration.

“Political parties are dynamic and politics is even more dynamic. Many possibilities can arise, especially in choosing political partners who are more compatible with us,” he said.

However, he was firm that any cooperation would be bound by non-negotiable principles.

Zahid said BN would not compromise on its core foundations: upholding Islam, the Malayrulers, the special position of the Malays, and the status of Bahasa Melayu, noting these were accepted by PH during the formation of the unity government.

This is something we can all learn from,” he said in his speech at the event here tonight.

Chow said Penang’s success has always been driven by its people, who continue to work hand in hand, respect one another and move forward together as one.

“So today, as we celebrate Vaisakhi, let us take home not just joy, but also its deeper meaning of unity, resilience and renewal,” he said.

Vaisakhi is one of the major festivals in the Sikh calendar, commemorating the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 and also marking the beginning of the harvest season according to the Punjabi and Sikh community calendars. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — The implementation of the MyDigital ID Single Sign-On (SSO) integration for the MyJPJ application, enforced since May 1, has been operating smoothly without any technical disruptions.

MyDigital ID said in a statement that the system remained stable and was functioning as planned, enabling users to access services more easily and securely.

It said that to date, seven million MyJPJ users had registered and logged in using MyDigital ID, with the total number of MyDigital ID users reaching 12 million.

According to MyDigital ID, the implementation of the SSO system also strengthens cybersecurity, as users only need to utilise one verified digital identity, based on official government records, to access public services.

“This approach reduces reliance on multiple passwords, thereby helping to curb the risk of account breaches, digital fraud and identity misuse,” the statement said.

Users are therefore encouraged to download and activate the MyDigital ID application to enable access to MyJPJ via the SSO method, while ensuring both applications are updated to the latest versions.

MyDigital ID also said it would continue to work closely with the Road Transport Department and the National Cyber Security Agency to ensure a secure, fast and seamless user experience, in line with efforts to strengthen the country’s digital service ecosystem. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today that political cooperation is now essential rather than optional, but stressed that it must be grounded in clear and firm principles.

Speaking at the party’s 80th anniversary celebration, Zahid said that any form of cooperation must remain anchored on clear principles, with Islam as the core while respecting other religions.

“The interests of the Malays must be prioritised, while acknowledging the rights of other communities. The Federal Constitution must remain the foundation, and the social contract must continue to bind us.

“We must approach politics with wisdom and maturity,” he said.

Zahid also called for a shift in political culture, urging leaders to move from confrontation to collaboration in politics, as part of a broader effort to stabilise the country’s political landscape.

He said that it is the responsibility of today’s leaders to ensure that Umno is built upon clear and enduring principles so that future generations can continue to serve the nation.

Having gone through 80 years of struggle, from crisis to victory and from one transformation to another, we must now look ahead, not just for the next five years or the next election, but for the next 20 years, towards Umno’s centenary.

“Leadership will change, but the foundation must remain strong,” he added.

Zahid said the party must strengthen its internal structure and unity, emphasising that its role goes beyond electoral success to shaping future generations with strong identity, values and purpose.

Looking ahead, he outlined his vision of a Malay community that is firmly grounded in Islamic identity, strong in character, progressive in thinking, and united in purpose.

He said the next two decades must focus on strengthening faith, restoring political stability, developing talent, mastering future technologies, and cultivating a culture of knowledge.

“That is my dream. And I hope the younger generation will turn that dream into reality,” he said.

Zahid added that he hopes to see a society capable of governing effectively, leading the nation, competing globally, and shaping economic and cultural progress while remaining in control of its own destiny.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Khairy Jamaluddin today said Umno must acknowledge its past mistakes as a party before it can begin rebuilding trust with voters who have turned away from it.

He said the party’s image had improved only “to some extent”.

“I think that we still have an uphill task in trying to recover public support,” he told reporters when met at the Umno 80th anniversary convention here today.

Khairy said Umno must recognise its past failings collectively, while also noting what he described as the party’s wider contributions to the country.

“As a party, we should acknowledge that we've made mistakes in the past, but at the same time, we've done more good, extremely good stuff for the country compared to the mistakes that we've made,” he said.

However, he said acknowledging those mistakes should not be treated as an immediate reset with voters, as public trust could only be rebuilt through further work.

On the current Negeri Sembilan political turmoil, Khairy said it was his view that the most acceptable way to determine whether Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun still commanded majority support was through a confidence or no-confidence vote in the state legislative assembly.

Khairy said that only after such a vote should the next step be decided, whether BN is given the opportunity to form the state government or the state assembly is dissolved.

SANDAKAN, May 2 — Sabah recorded 357 monkey malaria cases and one death in the first four months of this year, with Ranau, Kudat and Tawau as the main hotspots, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

“This is quite serious. Early detection and immediate treatment are key. All health clinics and hospitals are capable of detecting these monkey malaria cases,” he told reporters after launching the Wellness Hub in Sandakan today.

Dzulkefly added that close cooperation with the Wildlife Department and the Forestry Department is crucial in tackling this life-threatening disease.

Monkey malaria, also known as zoonotic malaria or simian malaria, is transmitted from monkeys to humans via mosquito bites and is typically caused by the parasite Plasmodium knowlesi.

Meanwhile, regarding the Wellness Hub, Dzulkefly said the initiative is an important catalyst in strengthening the country’s healthcare ecosystem towards a more comprehensive, proactive approach.

This programme helps communities embrace a healthy lifestyle by shifting the focus from seeking treatment to preventing sickness before it occurs.

He noted that this approach is increasingly urgent, given that the government’s annual cost of managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has reached RM64.3 billion, surpassing the entire Ministry of Health budget of RM46.52 billion.

“The burden of NCDs in Sabah is no less worrying. Looking at the data, the rates of obesity (50.4 per cent), high cholesterol (32.1 per cent), smoking prevalence (24.9 per cent), and sedentary behaviour(sitting or lying down for long periods) are very high at 57.7 per cent,” he said.

“There are 38 Wellness Hubs nationwide, with five in Sabah: Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Kudat, Keningau and Putatan. My ambition is to have at least one Wellness Hub per parliamentary constituency. We want to take a ‘prevent before sickness’ approach,” he said.

He added that the Wellness Hub also serves as a strategic platform to address stunting and malnutrition among children. — Bernama

SHAH ALAM, May 2 — A 25-year-old e-hailing passenger jumped from a moving car near Taman Eng Ann, Klang, yesterday morning after becoming fearful and anxious during the journey when she believed the driver was watching her.

Klang Utara District Police Chief ACP S. Vijaya Rao said in the incident, the local woman claimed the driver had been watching her through the rear-view mirror without any clear reason, before she opened the door on the right side and leapt out.

“The car was driven by a 47-year-old local man, a full-time e-hailing driver, who at the time was carrying two local female passengers. The driver stopped the vehicle and found that the woman sustained minor injuries.

“Following the incident, the complainant cancelled the e-hailing booking and, with the assistance of a motorcyclist at the scene, was sent to a nearby clinic for treatment,” he said in a statement today.

He said a police report was lodged by the e-hailing driver as a covering report for self-protection against any possible future implications, and the case is being investigated under Section 336 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, a one-minute dashcam recording went viral on social media, showing a woman dressed in white jumping out of a moving car in the Klang area. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani today said the party is in a rebuilding phase and must accept its current political reality, including holding only 26 parliamentary seats and no longer being the ruling party.

He said Umno’s long history of political dominance and success must now be followed by honest reflection as the party works to regain its strength.

“Umno has experienced a long era of glory. It has also felt the pain of decline from that period of success,” he said in his speech at Umno’s 80th anniversary here today.

Johari said any political recovery must begin with awareness of the party’s current position, warning that no organisation can move forward without first acknowledging reality.

“Before a party can rise, it must first have awareness. No one can wake up without being conscious. In the same way, the party must be aware of the current reality.

“Among the realities is that Umno now holds only 26 parliamentary seats. It must also acknowledge that it is no longer the ruling party and that voters today have many choices and diverse political preferences,” he added.

Johari said Umno had previously failed to give sufficient attention to younger voters, many of whom were not politically engaged with the party at the time.

However, he said the rise in youth participation in politics now made it essential for the party to adapt as part of its rebuilding efforts.

He said rebuilding after losing power is always difficult, and that historical success alone could no longer be used to appeal to future voters.

Johari said Umno’s reduced parliamentary presence was due to several factors, including a more competitive political environment.

“Since Umno is no longer the dominant governing party, Malaysia now has a more dynamic political landscape with a stronger opposition and emerging parties that grow stronger with each election,” Johari said.

“Second, voters today are more critical and better informed, especially due to technology and digital exposure. Social media has made citizens more analytical and demanding in their political expectations,” he added said.

He said internal conflict had also contributed to divisions within Umno, as differences of opinion that were previously managed internally were now being exposed publicly through social media, weakening party unity.

This, he said, had allowed other parties to draw support away from Umno, particularly among Malay voters.

Johari also cited shifting societal attitudes, saying voters now prioritise transparency, accountability and integrity.

“Most now live in urban areas, and their thinking is more urban, rational, and economy-driven.

“Their focus is on cost of living, employment, and personal opportunities, rather than political loyalty as in the past,” he said.

He said these changes had significantly influenced voting behaviour, including how political narratives are received and judged.

SANDAKAN, May 2 — The Ministry of Health has established an Interministerial Special Task Force to examine the issue of shortages of doctors and medical specialists, including aspects of talent retention in the national healthcare sector.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said a specific timeline has been set to refine and formulate comprehensive solutions to the matter.

“For a long time, the issue of shortages of doctors and medical specialists has persisted, and as a ministry based on healthcare facilities and services, with 151 hospitals, we certainly face various challenges.

“I am aware of this and have requested the (ministry) secretary-general and Health director-general to work together with the Ministry of Higher Education, as well as the Public Service Department and the Ministry of Finance to address this issue, particularly in Sabah,” he said.

He told reporters this after officially opening the Wellness Hub Sandakan here today.

Dzulkefly said the shortage of doctors must be addressed thoroughly in collaboration with other ministries in a systematic manner.

He said the special task force is also examining proposals to improve incentives for medical officers, including relocation allowances to encourage placements in Sabah.

“I want this matter to be viewed in the long term. There is no reason why such incentives cannot be given to doctors who are committed to serving in Sabah,” he said, adding that 42 house officers have recently been posted to the Duchess of Kent Hospital here.

On another matter, he said the ministry will soon submit a counter-proposal regarding operational expenditure cuts by the Ministry of Finance involving the healthcare sector.

Recently, the Ministry of Finance proposed a reduction in operational expenditure amounting to RM5.4 billion involving the healthcare and higher education sectors as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s fiscal position. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said that the party remains grounded in principle, insisting it will not be swayed by political pressure.

He said Umno is open to cooperation with any political party, but will never compromise on what he described as the “red lines” of its struggle.

“I want to make it clear that Umno is a party founded on principles. Umno is not a party that simply follows the prevailing winds.

“In any cooperation, we will never support or endorse negativity,” he said in his speech during Umno 80th anniversary here today.

Akmal also dismissed claims that he and other party leaders were politically vulnerable.

“There are people who claim that I am merely a ‘passing figure’, and that everyone will eventually be targeted and removed.

“Today, Negeri Sembilan stands as proof that Umno is not a party that can be easily pressured or intimidated,” he said,

He also said that Umno rejects opportunism in politics, describing the party as one that values sincerity over personal gain or political positioning.

“I personally do not favour actions that lack principle. That is why I say there is no need to chase positions at all costs. Let positions go, let titles go, but let principles remain. Today we remain because of principle, not personal interest,” he added.

He then went on to praise Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for taking a public stand against the organisation of an entertainment event in Bukit Bintang, noting that other Malay leaders within the unity government had not issued similar statements.

Akmal also responded to recent political calls for the removal of Umno representatives, including Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Selangor state government representative Datuk Rizam Ismail.

“If you want to dismiss people, do not pick and choose individuals. If you are truly bold, then dismiss all Umno ministers and deputy ministers at once because we want to make it clear that we are neither power-hungry nor obsessed with positions,” he said.

On Thursday, Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to sack Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan over alleged links to a “backdoor” government bid in Negeri Sembilan.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Puteri Umno chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi today urged the government to strengthen support for young women in the middle-income (M40) group, warning that many remain overlooked despite facing mounting economic and social pressures.

Speaking at the Umno 80th anniversary, she said the challenge facing Umno today is not to favour either older or younger generations, but to bridge the gap between them.

“This group is not merely carrying the burden of daily living, but is also balancing responsibilities and expectations,” she said.

“It is now time for the government not only to provide temporary relief, but to build an ecosystem that genuinely enables young women to grow and thrive without limitations.”

Nurul highlighted young M40 women as one such group, describing them as often perceived to be stable and resilient, yet quietly grappling with the strain of rising living costs and competing responsibilities.

She added that many in this group are not only managing their own livelihoods, but are also balancing career demands with family responsibilities and expectations.

“They may appear strong and composed, but beneath that, they are struggling to cope with increasing pressures,” she said.

She also called on the government to move beyond short-term assistance and instead develop a more comprehensive ecosystem that would enable young women to thrive.

Among the measures proposed were expanding access to income-generating opportunities to ensure more inclusive economic participation, as well as strengthening childcare support through affordable, safe and accessible nursery services, including at workplaces.

She also proposed increasing tax relief for each child from RM2,000 to RM3,000 to help ease financial burdens on families.

In addition, Nurul said the Budi Madani programme should be extended to private diesel vehicle owners who have also been affected by recent policy changes.

“These measures are important to ensure that young women are not caught between the demands of their careers and their responsibilities at home,” she said.

KUCHING, May 2 — The debate over the Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 should not be reduced to extreme positions and must instead be approached rationally, balancing values, freedom and economic considerations, according to Johor DAP vice-chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Sheikh Umar said Malaysia’s position as a Muslim-majority country with a diverse society requires policy discussions to be handled in a measured manner rather than emotionally.

He said the issue should not be viewed through a “black-and-white” lens of either total prohibition or complete freedom.

“Instead, we need to look at how any policy or activity impacts the overall well-being of society,” he said.

Sheikh Umar stressed that safeguarding religious values remains important, adding that concerns raised by the Muslim community over public morality and conduct in public spaces should be respected.

However, he said Malaysia is also part of a global ecosystem in tourism, economy and culture, and events such as the Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 should be considered within the context of a competitive tourism economy.

He said such events have the potential to attract international tourists, boost the hospitality and services sectors, and create economic opportunities for locals.

“Denying all of this entirely is also not a realistic approach in today’s world,” he said.

At the same time, he said moral and dignified living is a universal value shared across faiths, and that freedom must come with responsibility.

He added that the way forward is not outright bans or unrestricted freedom, but managed freedom guided by clear values.

Among the principles he outlined were freedom with responsibility, clear and structured regulatory space, consistent enforcement of rules, and education that helps society make informed choices rather than relying solely on enforcement.

Sheikh Umar also said Malaysia must mature in its understanding of majority rule and minority rights, stressing that while the majority shapes national direction, minority rights must still be protected.

He said Malaysia should not be forced to choose between being a principled nation and an economically competitive one, but instead must strive to be both — stable, moderate and globally trusted.

“Malaysia must continue moving forward as a nation grounded in values, but not afraid of progress,” he said.

KOTA KINABALU, May 2 — Sabah Electricity has acknowledged growing public concern over higher electricity bills in recent weeks, following claims on social media questioning whether the increase was due to higher tariff rates.

Its chief executive officer, Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar, said the utility company understands the financial strain faced by consumers amid rising living costs and takes seriously all feedback received.

He stressed that the increase in electricity bills is largely driven by higher energy consumption rather than any changes in tariff rates.

“The rise in electricity bills is influenced by several key factors, including increased usage due to prolonged hot weather, which has led to more frequent use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners,” he said in a statement issued on Saturday after attending the Sabah Electricity Kaamatan Chess Festival 2026 on Friday.

He added that modern lifestyles, which rely heavily on electrical appliances and digital devices, have also contributed to higher energy consumption in households and business premises.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Negeri Sembilan Umno will defer to party leadership on its next course of action following its withdrawal of support for the menteri besar, including any decision on a potential replacement, its chief Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said today.

Jalaluddin said the state chapter would abide by decisions made by Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership, including whether the next menteri besar should come from outside Umno.

“We will wait and see what the leadership decides, be it BN or PH. It is not for Negeri Sembilan Umno to determine,” he told reporters when met outside Merdeka Hall at the World Trade Centre.

He stressed that the current political crisis was “extraordinary”, following the decision by 14 Umno assemblymen on April 27 to withdraw support for the menteri besar.

Jalaluddin said the move came after issues the group could no longer accept, adding that the crisis was triggered by what he described as mismanagement by the menteri besar that disrupted the state’s political harmony.

“This is not about politics, power or ‘tebuk atap’ (back door). This concerns governance and the institutions of adat and the Negeri Sembilan monarchy,” he said.

He added that the loss of confidence by the 14 assemblymen was final and not a shifting political stance.

“If we have pulled support and the menteri besar continues to govern, it means we have lost trust,” he said.

Jalaluddin reiterated that Umno Negeri Sembilan is prepared to take on the role of opposition if directed by party leadership, potentially until the next general election.

“What we will do next depends on Umno’s decision. We don’t mind being in the opposition and if we are to be in the opposition, we will remain so until GE16,” he said.

On speculation over a replacement menteri besar, including the possibility of a PKR candidate, he said the matter was premature.

He warned that public debate surrounding the issue risked creating confusion, particularly among younger Malaysians, and could harm the reputation of Negeri Sembilan’s adat institutions.

“The question now is not about individuals or positions, but about the responsibility of a menteri besar. We cannot allow a crisis like this to happen, especially one involving adat,” he said.

“When such matters are debated openly, many will not fully understand adat. This can lead to negative perceptions and confusion among youths and students,” he added.

Jalaluddin said Umno was compelled to act to prevent further damage.

Earlier in his speech, Jalaluddin said many had accused Umno of betraying the government, but they forget that in 2023, Umno Negeri Sembilan won 14 seats — the most among all parties.

In the 2023 Negeri Sembilan state polls, Umno secured 14 seats, followed by PKR (five), DAP (11), Perikatan Nasional (five), and Amanah (one).

Jalaluddin pointed out that with the strongest representation at the time, he could have moved to destabilise the government earlier if he had intended to do so.

“If I wanted to stir something, I could have done it then but I respected the federal leadership’s call to maintain peace and stability so that we could work together,” he said.

He said Umno had continued to play its role within the state government over the past two-and-a-half years, including holding four executive council (exco) positions.

Rejecting accusations of a “tebuk atap” (backdoor takeover), Jalaluddin said such claims were misplaced.

“Tebuk atap is when you try to take over the government from outside. We are already part of the government — we have exco positions and allocations. What ‘tebuk atap’ is this?” he asked.

He stressed that the withdrawal of support was prompted by dissatisfaction with the state government’s handling of a recent crisis, which he said could not be compromised.

“We are also close to the general election, but we cannot compromise when there is failure in governance,” he said.

Jalaluddin said Umno Negeri Sembilan would now sit in the opposition for as long as it believes the state government is not performing effectively.

He added that the party would focus on strengthening its position ahead of the next general election.

“We will do our best to win all seats. We do not need to cater to others’ feelings. As chairman of the state Umno machinery, it is my responsibility to ensure we are in a dominant position,” he said.

He also rejected claims that Umno’s actions were motivated by a desire for power or positions.

“Umno Negeri Sembilan is not greedy or hungry for posts. We did not want to disrupt the momentum, but we acted because we have principles we cannot abandon — integrity, and our promises to religion and nation,” he said.

Reaffirming the party’s stance, Jalaluddin ended with a firm message: “No retreat, no surrender.”
