KOTA KINABALU, June 18 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) today officially accepted the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) as its newest component party, strengthening the local coalition’s ranks ahead of the next state election.

GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the decision was made unanimously during a GRS supreme council meeting held here today and takes immediate effect.

“We have unanimously agreed to accept Upko as a new component member of GRS.

“This is in line with GRS’ own struggle of ‘Sabah United, Sabah First’ and to strengthen local parties within the coalition,” he told reporters after the meeting.

Upko becomes the sixth component party in GRS after formally applying to join the coalition last month.

Hajiji, who is also Sabah chief minister and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah president, said Upko’s admission would further strengthen the stability of the state government led by GRS.

He confirmed that Upko’s membership became effective immediately following the supreme council’s decision.

“Starting today, Upko is officially a member of GRS and we will formally notify the party of the decision,” he said.

Asked whether any component parties had expressed concerns over Upko’s entry into the coalition, Hajiji said the decision received unanimous support.

“There were none. Everyone agreed because we want to strengthen GRS. There are no issues or concerns,” he said.

Upko president Datuk Ewon Benedick submitted the party’s application directly to Hajiji last month.

At the time, Ewon said Upko wanted to contribute towards greater unity and cooperation among Sabah-based parties to strengthen efforts to develop the state’s future.

He also said the party remained committed to championing Sabah’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Federal Constitution.

Just days leading up to the Sabah state election in November last year, Upko controversially announced its exit from the national governing coalition Pakatan Harapan, citing differences over the interpretation and implementation of Sabah’s constitutional rights — particularly the 40 per cent revenue entitlement.

Upko has been campaigning on a “Sabah First” political agenda, which Ewon previously said aligns with GRS’ Sabah-centred approach under the Sabah Maju Jaya development framework.

The other five component parties in GRS are Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Cinta Sabah.

Three parties – Sabah STAR, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Usno – had quit GRS before and after the state election.

ARA DAMANSARA, June 18 — Advocacy group SIS Forum (Malaysia) said it plans to draft its own proposed Bill to ensure all Malaysians pay the financial support owed to their spouse, former spouse and children, amid statistics on a persistent problem of men failing to pay up when marriages break down.

SIS Forum also wants the Malaysian government to set up a new government agency to help all Malaysians get the financial support that should be paid by their former spouse, saying that this proposed agency should help both Muslims and non-Muslims.

SIS Forum executive director Rozana Isa said the non-governmental organisation is planning to also come up with cost estimates when it prepares a draft of the suggested new law for the government.

“We also need to start drafting a Bill. We can’t wait for the ministry to draft the Bill. The lesson we have learnt is we need to draft the Bill ourselves.

“This will be quite a lot of work that we will have to undertake. Because one of the things that is always questioned when you propose a Bill to be tabled is the issue of cost. We have to put in the estimated cost.

“We can no longer just expect to put in a Bill without having a number. Because then nobody is going to take the initiative, so we have to figure out the numbers for that as well. It’s quite a big task which we are quite excited about.

“If we can get this off the ground, I think it will create a change and stem further injustice to our children who will also become parents, wives and mothers themselves down the road,” she said today at the launch of SIS Forum’s 10-year report of its free legal advice service Telenisa’s statistics and findings.

As part of SIS Forum’s long-term plan with a timeline of three years or more, the new federal law it wants pushed for drafting is the Spousal and Child Maintenance Agency Bill to strengthen the enforcement of the rights of “both Muslim and non-Muslim women” to maintenance or financial support from men.

For this proposed new law, SIS Forum said the relevant stakeholders would be the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) in the Prime Minister’s Department, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), Syariah courts and the Attorney General’s Chambers’ drafting division.

How big is the unpaid child support problem? (At least 4,800)

Rozana today unveiled Telenisa’s 10-year data based on the 4,761 individuals, about 90 per cent of whom are women, who had asked for help and legal information, with a total of 2,110 cases related to children.

During the 2016 to 2025 period, almost half of those 2,110 cases were about Muslim men’s financial support for children: 633 cases of unpaid child maintenance, and 367 cases involving child maintenance.

So that is 1,000 cases in total.

“Therefore it can be concluded that divorce has a significant impact on child maintenance, particularly involving arrears and child maintenance, which together total 1,000 cases (47.4 per cent). This shows that nearly half of child-related issues are closely linked to financial responsibilities towards children after family breakdown,” the Telenisa 10-year report said.

Rozana also cited the Malaysian government’s December 4, 2025 written parliamentary reply to Bangi MP Syahredzan, where the Department of Syariah Judiciary Malaysia’s (JKSM) Family Support Division (BSK) recorded 4,886 cases of Muslims breaching court orders to pay child maintenance during a five-year period from 2020 to 2024.

Rozana acknowledged that JKSM’s BSK does try to help address cases of Muslim women and children who face unpaid maintenance issues, but said it might need more resources than it currently has.

Proposed solution: A new govt agency to resolve child maintenance for all Malaysians

“One of the reasons why SIS is calling for establishment of a federal Child Support Agency, so that no children would be left in these kind of situations anymore,” Rozana said.

Rozana said SIS Forum is not just asking for Muslim children to be able to get child maintenance, but wants this agency to also help ensure non-Muslim children do not face problems of unpaid child support.

SIS Forum is proposing that the Malaysian government set up this special national-level agency to also cover issues of spouse maintenance.

“This agency will manage and monitor maintenance payments, including an automatic salary deduction system, access to a maintenance order database, and legal action against non-compliance,” it said in its proposal.

The relevant stakeholders for this proposal will be the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development; Jakim; the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam); the civil courts and Syariah courts, SIS Forum said.

Recommended reading:

From salary deductions to credit blacklists: Ideas to enforce child support in Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA, June 18 — The Court of Appeal here today reduced the general damages awarded to DAP adviser Lim Guan Eng from RM1.05 million to RM450,000 in a defamation suit filed against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin relating to the revocation of tax exemption for Yayasan Albukhary.

A three-member panel comprising Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli, Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid and Datuk Seri Latifah Mohd Tahar made the ruling after allowing part of Muhyiddin’s appeal against the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision.

In the unanimous verdict, Justice Azhahari said after examining the three impugned statements dated March 9, 11, and 12, 2023, the High Court was correct in finding that the statements were defamatory and there was no reason to disturb this finding of fact.

“On the issue of quantum, having considered the pattern of events, and the evidence adduced at trial, we are of the opinion that the general damages awarded are manifestly high.

“Accordingly, this court awarded RM150,000 for each of the three statements leading to RM450,000. We therefore substitute the sum of RM1.05 million with RM450,000,” he said.

The panel also set aside the High Court’s decision in awarding RM150,000 for aggravated damages and RM150,000 for exemplary damages to Lim.

However, the court granted Lim’s cross appeal on interest and ordered that interest be paid at the rate of five per cent per annum from the date of judgment until full settlement.

The panel ordered Muhyiddin to pay RM5,000 in costs to Lim, while the former Penang chief minister was ordered to pay RM30,000 in costs to the former prime minister.

On March 27, 2023, Lim filed a lawsuit against Muhyiddin for allegedly making three defamatory Facebook statements on March 9, 11, and 12, 2023, involving him in the tax exemption issue.

Reports on the matter were subsequently published in several newspapers and news portals.

In November 2024, the High Court allowed Lim’s suit and ordered Muhyiddin to pay RM350,000 for each of the three statements leading to RM1.05 million in general damages, RM150,000 for aggravated damages and RM150,000 for exemplary damages. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) will be tabled at the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament next week.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the proposed amendments cover 11 scopes involving 42 clauses, including the introduction of penalties for illegal racing and “tonto” activities, as well as higher fines for serious offences, Harian Metro reported today.

He said this round of amendments is the most comprehensive in recent years, following the last revision in 2020 which increased penalties for drunk driving offences.

“This is the first amendment to be brought this year, and another amendment is expected to be tabled in the Parliament session at the end of the year.

“The second amendment (at the end of the year) will focus on proposals for a compensation mechanism for victims of accidents involving drunk drivers, drug-positive drivers or reckless driving, to ensure justice for victims,” he said during a special media briefing at the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) here today.

Loke said one of the key focuses of the amendments is strengthening the digital transformation of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to reduce reliance on conventional enforcement methods.

He said technologies such as the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system would allow enforcement officers to automatically detect road tax status, insurance coverage and vehicle records without stopping vehicles at roadblocks.

“We want smarter and more efficient enforcement, and to reduce direct interaction between officers and road users.

“This approach will not only improve enforcement effectiveness, but also reduce negative perceptions and integrity issues often associated with roadside inspections,” he said.

He said the amendments also aim to curb illegal racing activities and address “tonto” interference, where individuals tail or obstruct enforcement officers.

“We want clearer legal provisions so action can be taken against any party that interferes with or disrupts enforcement duties.

“In addition, the amendments also cover cross-border mobility and other issues that require alignment with current developments,” he said.

On proposals to raise the maximum compound from RM300, Loke said the increase would not apply to all offences, but only selected serious and repeat violations.

He said the current compound rate is no longer seen as an effective deterrent for some road users.

However, if approved, implementation will not be immediate.

“We are looking at a transition period of at least two years before the new rate is enforced.

“The aim is to give the public time to adjust and ensure the implementation is carried out in an orderly manner,” he said.

He said the Bill will be tabled for first reading on Monday, followed by debate at second reading the next day.

He added that the proposed amendments had already undergone scrutiny by the Parliamentary Special Select Committee, involving both government and opposition representatives, before being finalised for tabling in the Dewan Rakyat.

PASIR GUDANG, June 18 — The Johor Department of Environment (DoE) has detected air pollution that was believed to be caused by oil residue following an inspection in Taman Tanjung Puteri Resort here.

The DoE team, from the Pasir Gudang branch, were alerted on the matter after worried resident detected a chemical odour since last Saturday.

Johor DoE director Mohd Famey Yusoff said the department’s enforcement team and the Taman Pasir Putih police were despatched to the affected area following the complaints.

He said the team conducted an investigation and also monitoring at the location.

“We found that there was a strong odour resembling the smell of oil and traces of black oil residue found at the main drain of the residential area.

“Further checks found evidence of waste oil dumping at a house near the location of the incident, which is believed to be the cause of the odour pollution,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Famey said the individuals concerned have been identified and their statements taken by DoE investigators.

“Immediate clean-up action was later carried out by contractors appointed by the Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG).

“If the investigation results in a release, spill or pollution that violates the provisions under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Act 127), appropriate enforcement action will be taken,” he said.

Mohd Famey said all parties are reminded not to dispose of any oil, chemicals and scheduled wastes into drains and public drainage systems.

He said this can cause environmental pollution and affect the health and well-being of local residents.

“DoE is still conducting investigations to identify the type and source of the oil residue,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has warned that local vehicle owners found renting out their vehicles to foreigners in the state will no longer be given warnings and will instead be taken straight to court.

Selangor JPJ deputy director Datuk Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat said motorcycles were among the most commonly rented vehicles, with daily, weekly and monthly arrangements offered at set rates, according to a report published by Kosmo! Online today.

He said foreigners typically use the rented vehicles for business activities such as selling food, transporting gas cylinders and scrap metal.

“The actions not only endanger road users but also violate the law. Local owners involved will be brought to court without compromise,” he told a press conference at the Selangor JPJ office in Padang Jawa here.

He said 239 foreigners had been taken action against under the Foreign Driver Operation (Ops Pewa) in Selangor from January until yesterday.

He said the main offences detected involved not having a Competent Driving Licence (CDL), Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM), vocational licence (GDL) and insurance coverage.

“In the same period, 304 vehicles were acted upon, with 95 seized for further action,” he said.

Ahmad Kamarunzaman added that vehicle owners, employers and transport companies are fully responsible for offences committed by drivers using their vehicles, including foreigners.

He said registered vehicle owners can be charged under Section 109 of the Road Transport Act 1987, while Section 64 of the same Act allows JPJ to seize vehicles if foreign drivers are found without valid licences.

PORT DICKSON, June 18 — A total of 388 sexual harassment cases were recorded during the first five months of this year, according to Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Lim Hui Ying.

She said statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) also showed a rising trend in reported sexual harassment cases, increasing from 477 cases in 2022 to 1,038 cases last year.

According to Lim, the increase does not necessarily reflect a higher prevalence of incidents alone, but also indicates greater public awareness and courage among victims and communities to come forward and reject the culture of silence.

“Based on our data, most cases occur in the workplace and involve individuals who have family ties to the victim. Feelings of shame or concerns over careers and family relationships may still prevent many victims from lodging reports.

“I urge colleagues, employers and family members to provide support to victims. These cases do not only involve women but also men, although the number of male victims remains relatively low,” she told reporters after officiating the Zero Tolerance of Violence: Say No T programme.

Lim stressed that sexual harassment is a serious form of misconduct that undermines a victim’s dignity, emotional well-being and overall quality of life, and should never be normalised in society.

Meanwhile, she said that as of June 15, the Tribunal for Anti-Sexual Harassment (TAGS) had received 100 complaints, with 82 cases resolved within 60 days of the first hearing, demonstrating the tribunal’s effectiveness in accelerating access to justice.

She added that the ministry, through the Women’s Development Department, is also implementing Women, Peace and Security (WPS) advocacy initiatives in line with the National Action Plan 2025–2030 to strengthen women’s roles in national security and development.

“I hope all parties will work together with the ministry to expand advocacy efforts related to sexual harassment and increase public awareness of rights, personal safety and prevention.

“Issues that are not addressed at an early stage may escalate into more serious situations and lead to various forms of violence that affect individuals and social harmony,” she said.

Lim emphasised that everyone, including parents, educators, employers, colleagues and students, shares the responsibility of building a culture of zero tolerance towards sexual harassment.

“Early education, the courage to speak up and stronger support systems for victims must continue to be strengthened,” she said.

She added that the government provides integrated support services through multiple channels, including counselling and psychosocial support via Talian Kasih 15999, which operates 24 hours a day, alongside local social support centres to ensure those in need can access timely assistance. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The High Court has dismissed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) judicial review application to challenge a freeze order imposed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on two of its bank accounts.

The Star reported that Justice Aliza Sulaiman, now a Court of Appeal judge, ruled that the applicants failed to prove the MACC’s actions were ultra vires, illegal, procedurally improper, irrational or made in bad faith.

“I do not think any of these has been established. In the premises, the applicants’ application is dismissed,” she said in brief grounds of judgment.

The court did not make any order as to costs.

Berita Harian in a separate report said that the High Court had earlier on October 30, 2023 granted Bersatu leave to initiate judicial review proceedings against MACC’s seizure of its bank accounts.

The application was filed on May 29, 2023 by Capt (Rtd) Datuk Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya in his capacity as a party official.

He named then attorney-general Tan Sri Idrus Harun and then MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, along with 20 others, as respondents.

Bersatu contended that its CIMB and AmBank accounts were seized on April 19, 2023 without a seizure order being served under Section 50(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

The party also alleged that although MACC issued a statement on April 20, 2023 stating the accounts had been seized on April 11, it was never notified of the action on that date.

JOHOR BAHRU, June 18 — The state government launched the Johor Economic Transformation Plan (JETP) by identifying 83 investment projects across eight priority industries, which are expected to contribute investments worth RM167.4 billion.

State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said that the industries, which include health and pharmaceuticals, logistics, aerospace, tourism, agriculture, energy, electrical and electronics, as well as chemicals and petrochemicals, will further elevate Johor’s economy to a higher level.

He said focusing on these industries would strengthen the state’s investment narrative, thereby giving investors confidence in the government’s consistent support.

According to him, JETP is capable of accelerating investment realisation in the state through the implementation of 32 strategic intervention initiatives, which were identified based on key challenges and opportunities raised by stakeholders in the private sector and relevant public agencies.

“All these initiatives have undergone a filtering and prioritisation process to ensure that the state focuses on the most critical interventions. These initiatives are then evaluated based on their economic impact and ease of implementation,” he said while presenting the JETP at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here today.

Also present were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the Economic and Investment Advisor of Johor Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad, and President and Chairman of Pemandu Associates Datuk Seri Idris Jala.

Lee said the JETP was introduced to strengthen Johor’s position as the country’s main economic hub and to support the growth of existing and future industries.

The plan, he said, was developed to strengthen the second core of Maju Johor 2030, namely economic development, by focusing efforts on attracting high-quality investments from international and domestic sources, stimulating economic growth through incentives, infrastructure development and a business-friendly environment.

“This plan also aims to empower the workforce with skills and knowledge aligned with industry needs and to create quality job opportunities for the people, in support of inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” he said.

Lee said three main targets were also set under the plan to ensure the state government achieves a gross domestic product (GDP) target of RM260 billion, with an expectation of more than 200,000 new job opportunities by 2030.

“Through the development of high-value sectors, Johor’s GDP per capita is expected to exceed RM69,000 by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5 per cent, thus surpassing the threshold of high-income states according to the World Bank benchmark,” he said.

He added that under the JETP, each district will play a strategic role in ensuring more inclusive and balanced economic growth, thereby complementing and strengthening the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) through the development of local sector ecosystems. — Bernama

PORT KLANG, June 18 — The Selangor State Government is finalising the settlement of the land issue as the initial phase of the development of the Port Klang Third Terminal on Carey Island, here.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the process is being studied by the Transport Ministry and the Selangor government together with the private sector involving a concession model.

“So right now we are dealing with the Selangor State Government to first resolve the land issue.

“(The construction of this third port) will involve the Build-Operate-Transfer model. We do have a target if possible to start (construction) of the project this year but what is important now is that the land issue needs to be resolved,” he said.

He said this after the Pre-Launch Ceremony of Wisma Golden Horse, Q Centre @ PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQ), the opening of the Suntek Materials Sdn Bhd Factory and the Golden Horse Rubber Factory Phase 2 involving a cumulative new investment value of RM566 million and the launch of PKFZ: Smart Intelligence Industrial Park in PKFZ, Pulau Indah today.

On May 11, Loke was reported to have said that the government had approved the development project of the Third Terminal of Port Klang on Carey Island in Selangor.

The Third Terminal of Port Klang on Carey Island is a strategic project that is important to strengthen Malaysia's economic capabilities and position in the port and logistics sectors.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had instructed all relevant agencies to move quickly in realising the development of the Third Terminal of Port Klang on Carey Island.

On Sept 17, 2025, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari reportedly said that the state government has identified 1,699.68 hectares (4,200 acres) of land to be developed as a third port at Pulau Carey, Kuala Langat covering 1,011.71 hectares (2,500 acres) of seabed land under the management of the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) and 687.96 hectares (1,700 acres) of coastal land owned by Yayasan Selangor.

Meanwhile, commenting on employment opportunities for military retirees to meet the need for skilled manpower, Loke informed that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between PKFZ and the Armed Forces Ex-Servicemen’s Affairs Corporation (Perhebat) two weeks ago.

Loke said the MoU was also witnessed by him and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the government’s efforts to meet the demands of the industry and the market for the provision of skilled manpower.

On March 16, Loke reportedly said that the government would implement a special programme for retirees and military veterans to obtain a class E licence to drive heavy vehicles which is an effort to address the shortage of heavy vehicle drivers in the haulage and logistics industry. — Bernama

SUBANG, June 18 — The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is progressively strengthening its Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to enhance monitoring of the country’s maritime zones, particularly in the South China Sea.

Chief of Air Force, General Tan Sri Muhamad Norazlan Aris, said the second phase of the initiative will involve procuring three additional ANKA Medium Altitude Long Endurance-Unmanned Aerial System (MALE-UAS) units.

He said the Ministry of Defence has agreed in principle to the procurement and is awaiting funding for this phase, which will also include Electronic Warfare (EW) and ISR suites.

“(With the) three existing units and an additional three (from phase two), our long-term target is to operate a total of nine (ANKA UAS) aircraft,” he told reporters at the RMAF’s 68th Anniversary Parade here today.

Muhamad Norazlan said the RMAF is scheduled to receive its first P-72M maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) from Italy next April, further strengthening air surveillance operations.

He said the MPA platforms have improved capabilities compared to the three existing CN-235 maritime surveillance aircraft (MSA), especially in operational range, integrated mission systems and monitoring effectiveness.

“Its (MPA) monitoring effectiveness is superior, and it will progressively enhance the RMAF’s capability in executing ISR mission sets,” he said.

He added that the responsibility for safeguarding the sovereignty of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea does not rest solely on the RMAF but is supported by joint operations with other national security agencies.

Muhamad Norazlan also said that the RMAF is in the final review stage of procuring a Medium-Range Air Defence (MERAD) system to complete the country’s multi-layered air defence network.

“The procurement of the MERAD system is critical to complete the country’s air defence umbrella. It acts as a protective shield that plugs the capability gap between short-range air defence (SHORAD) systems on the ground and the combat air patrol (CAP) radius of our fighter aircraft,” he said.

He added that the main factor in selecting the MERAD system is its ability to integrate with the RMAF’s modern Command and Control (C2) grid. — Bernama

MIRI, June 18 — Police have arrested a 30‑year‑old local man in connection with a string of five break‑ins at business premises in the city.

Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the district’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) received several reports of break-ins between mid-May and early June.

He said information gathered at the crime scenes, coupled with continuous intelligence work, led to the suspect’s detention at the Pujut 2 housing area at around 7pm on June 10.

“An aggressive investigation on the suspect led to the recovery of clothing and accessories worn during break-ins,” Mohd Farhan said, adding that police also seized a small saw modified to force open roller shutter locks at the targeted shops.

With the arrest, Mohd Farhan said the district police have resolved all five cases sharing the same modus operandi, reported at Airport Commercial Centre, Assar Commercial Miri Bypass, Mosjaya, Permyjaya and Boulevard Miri, with total losses estimated at RM15,000.

He added that the suspect, who tested positive for drugs in a urine test, also has several past criminal records, including drug-related offences in Miri and other districts.

“The suspect is now facing charges under Section 457 of the Penal Code for each offence committed. The section provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and may also include a fine. For second and subsequent offences, whipping may additionally be imposed,” he said. — The Borneo Post

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The registration status of Parti Wawasan Negara with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) is not an issue as the party only underwent a name change following a takeover, says Gerakan Reset founder Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

The matter was reported by The Star.

Hamzah said the faction he leads had taken over an existing registered party and simply changed its name.

“I took over a party, we only changed the name,” he told reporters after attending a meeting of opposition Members of Parliament at PAS headquarters here on Wednesday.

He added that discussions at the meeting also focused on preparations for the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.

“As we know, a decision has already been made in Johor, so we want to determine how to ensure the victory of our candidates, and the same goes for Negeri Sembilan,” he said.

Hamzah said MPs present agreed on the need to go to the ground and support candidates as part of the election preparations.

“Therefore, all discussions required our friends, especially MPs, to go down to the ground and help our candidates, which is what we discussed,” he said.

Earlier, Hamzah and 16 other MPs from Gerakan Reset Malaysia attended the meeting with PAS MPs, which lasted nearly two hours.

SUBANG JAYA, June 18 — The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) plans to replace its existing C-130 Hercules transport aircraft in line with growing operational demands and the ageing condition of the fleet.

RMAF Chief Gen Tan Sri Muhamad Norazlan Aris said the plan is receiving special attention as out of the 10 units of C-130 aircraft that they currently operate, the earliest unit that they received is now 50 years old, while the latest is 31 years old.

He said rising maintenance costs for ageing aircraft, coupled with the technological advantages and greater payload capacity of newer-generation aircraft, make the replacement of the C-130 a necessity despite the proven capabilities of the current model.

“The RMAF’s responsibilities are becoming greater and more challenging, therefore we need assets capable of carrying out those tasks,” he told reporters after the 68th Royal Malaysian Air Force Anniversary Parade here today.

According to him, RMAF is also conducting studies on replacing its multi-role combat aircraft and increasing the number of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) by 2035, as existing assets are expected to face obsolescence and maintenance support issues by then.

Muhamad Norazlan said they had yet to decide whether to acquire 4.5-generation, fifth-generation or sixth-generation aircraft, as any new procurement must take into account the defensive nature of the National Defence Policy.

Meanwhile, he said infrastructure facilities at Kuantan Air Base to handle the operation of FA-50 LCA are expected to be fully completed by October.

He said six RMAF pilots are currently undergoing FA-50 flight training at Gwangju Air Base in South Korea together with a technical support team, with two of them scheduled to complete training in October and the remaining four in December.

“Once they return, they can begin flying immediately. We only need to establish the squadron and prepare the standard operating procedures (SOPs) according to RMAF requirements,” he said, adding that the arrival of the FA-50 would enable RMAF to train more pilots locally before they progress to more advanced aircraft.

The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in 2023 for the acquisition of 18 FA-50 aircraft, with the first two expected to be delivered to the RMAF in October and the remainder to follow in stages. — Bernama

JOHOR BAHRU, June 18 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) is expected to announce the list of candidates contesting in the Johor state election this Monday, said Johor PKR chairman Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

Zaliha, who is also PKR vice-president, said the announcement was expected to be made at a ceremony involving the party’s top leadership, including PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“The announcement of candidates has been agreed upon by the state and central PH. God willing, we will hold it in the north of Johor, possibly in Bukit Gambir, Tangkak,” she said in an interview with Bernama.

Dr Zaliha said the selection of the location in the northern part of Johor was to further fuel the wave of support from the people, which was seen to be increasing after several series of programmes in the northern zone, including in Bukit Naning, which showed very encouraging responses.

Elaborating further, she said the selection of candidates involved views from the branch level to ensure that those chosen truly understood the needs of the local community and had a good service record.

“We also include elements of professionals, young people, women and racial diversity so that there is balance in the team of candidates that are presented,” she said.

Dr Zaliha said that apart from representing various community groups, the candidates chosen also need to have the ability to contribute to PH’s larger goals in this election.

She said PH did not enter the election arena simply to increase the number of seats it had won previously, but rather with the target of forming a state government.

PH will contest in all 56 State Legislative Assembly seats, with PKR fielding candidates in 20 seats, DAP (17) and Amanah (19).

The Johor state election is set for July 11, with nominations on June 27 and early voting on July 7. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Muda has maintained “good ties” with Bersatu in Johor, though discussions on a potential electoral pact for the state polls have yet to reach a conclusion.

The party’s president, Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz, said Muda had begun engagement with all opposition parties on possible cooperation, but no final decision had been made apart from its existing arrangement with Parti Sosialis Malaysia under a “progressive bloc”, according to Free Malaysia Today.

She added that the current status of Perikatan Nasional itself was also unclear.

“What I can share is that Muda has a good relationship with Bersatu in Johor,” she told reporters.

Amira, who was formerly Puteri Wangsa assemblyman before the Johor state assembly was dissolved, said any potential partners must align with Muda’s policy direction.

“The most important thing before we finalise cooperation is whether the other parties are committed to promoting progressive policies. We need to settle that first before deciding on anything else,” she said.

She also called on opposition parties to conclude negotiations soon so they can focus on policy matters during the campaign period.

Amira said Muda had already decided on the number of seats it would contest in Johor and had finalised its list of candidates.

“We will announce our candidates in the near future. I do not want to get ahead of the plans that have been made,” she said, adding that about 50 per cent of Muda’s candidates are women.

The Johor state election will be held on July 11.

GEORGE TOWN, June 18 — Penang is pressing ahead with the proposed Penang International Financial Centre (PIFC) as part of efforts to nurture more home-grown corporate champions, with its white paper expected to be completed by the end of July or early August this year.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the document would provide a comprehensive framework for the centre’s development and outline practical steps to translate the initiative into reality.

“If we are serious about building local champions, we must also build the financial infrastructure that enables them to grow. That is why we are advancing the PIFC.

“High-growth companies require more than traditional financing. They need access to venture capital, private equity, cross-border investment networks and capital market expertise,” he said in his keynote address at the Penang Economic Forum 2026 here today.

The one-day forum was jointly organised by RHB Banking Group and Penang Institute.

Chow said the PIFC aims to attract capital inflows, support Penang’s technology ecosystem and provide local businesses with better access to funding and advisory services to innovate, expand internationally and eventually become publicly listed companies.

He said Penang was home to more than 6,500 manufacturing-related small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and over 350 multinational corporations, with many local companies already participating in global supply chains.

However, the next challenge was to help these SMEs move further up the value chain by becoming innovators, owning intellectual property, competing internationally and gaining access to capital markets.

“As at May 17, 2026, Penang had only 106 publicly listed companies. For a state that contributes so significantly to Malaysia’s exports and manufacturing output, I believe we can do better.

“Every successful listed company begins as an SME. The next SkyeChip, Pentamaster, ViTrox or regional technology champion may very well be sitting in this room today,” he added. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The High Court today fixed August 13 to hear an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) seeking to restrain Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid from managing offshore assets valued at US$157.5 million and £85 million located in Jersey, a British Crown territory.

The application seeks to prohibit the widow of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, or any parties linked to her, from dealing with the offshore assets.

Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin set the hearing date during case management proceedings attended by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat and lawyer Muhammad Nizamuddin Abdul Hamid, who appeared for Na’imah.

Na’imah was exempted from attending today’s proceedings.

According to court filings, the application was submitted on June 25 last year after MACC alleged that the assets were acquired by Na’imah or individuals associated with her in Malaysia and had not been declared to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).

The application was made under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001), following investigations under Section 113 of the Income Tax Act and Section 4(1) of the AMLATFPUAA.

This marks the third application filed by the prosecution involving overseas assets, following earlier proceedings concerning assets in the United Kingdom and Singapore.

On June 19, 2025, MACC sought a restraining order to prevent Na’imah, her son Muhammed Amir Zainuddin, two individuals, five companies and related parties from managing overseas assets, including investment funds worth GBP21 million and USD99 million held in Singapore.

However, the High Court dismissed that application on May 22, 2026.

Separately, in proceedings involving The Ilham Foundation, the court fixed June 30 to deliver its decision on Na’imah’s application to set aside MACC’s bid to freeze several commercial and residential properties in London valued at GBP132 million.

Previously, on May 22, 2025, then MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki disclosed that eight investigation papers had been opened following fresh information received from foreign agencies concerning assets linked to Daim, his family members and proxies.

He said the latest information indicated that the assets under scrutiny had not been declared during MACC’s investigation in 2023. — Bernama

SHAH ALAM, June 18 — A salesman pleaded guilty today in the Sessions Court to attacking a motorcyclist with a meat cleaver on the Federal Highway last Thursday.

Azmi Jantan, 42, entered the plea after the charge was read out before Judge Datin Fatimah Zahari.

He was charged with intentionally causing grievous hurt to Mohd Fairus Jaafar, 45, using a meat cleaver, which constitutes a deadly weapon, at Section 13 of the Federal Highway along the motorcycle lane at KM14.6 at around 8.19am on June 11.

The charge falls under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or caning upon conviction.

The prosecution, led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ho Zee Xing, earlier recommended that bail be set at RM30,000 with one surety.

He also requested that the accused surrender his passport and report to the nearest police station once a month.

The unrepresented salesman appealed to the court to reduce bail to RM5,000, citing his responsibility to support his wife and his status as a salesperson.

The man was granted bail of RM15,000 with one local surety, subject to the additional condition that he report to a nearby police station monthly until the conclusion of his case.

The court also set July 8 for the presentation of the facts of the case and sentencing.

A viral video showed a man being attacked with a meat cleaver along the Kuala Lumpur-bound motorcycle lane of the Federal Highway near Section 13, sustaining cuts to his head and arms.

The victim, on his way to work, reportedly honked at the suspect for blocking his path, sparking an argument that led to the attack. — Bernama

JOHOR BAHRU, June 18 — Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has urged party members not selected as candidates for the upcoming state election to remain steadfast in the coalition’s struggle.

The Johor caretaker menteri besar said efforts to strengthen the party must remain strong, with the people as the primary focus of the struggle.

“Not being selected (as candidates) is not the end. There may be other responsibilities ahead as Members of Parliament, and some may serve in the party machinery, as the seats are limited.

“Just like any other party, they will also face similar challenges, but the important thing is that we must remain steadfast in the party’s struggle, with the ultimate objective of serving the people,” he said in a special interview with the media at the Johor Menteri Besar’s official residence in Saujana here yesterday.

He said this when asked about his advice to individuals who were not selected to contest in the Johor state election this time.

The incumbent Machap assemblyman said that the BN candidate selection process is about 80 per cent complete, but the final list will only be confirmed once candidates receive their watikah (letters of appointment).

“At this 80 per cent stage, everything can still change. Nothing is cast in stone until the day you receive your watikah, as there have been cases where watikahs previously issued were withdrawn,” he said.

Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz said that the candidate selection criteria cover diverse professional backgrounds, are not restricted to any particular age group and require candidates to be well known in their respective state constituencies.

“The candidate must be a local, known in the constituency, and acceptable to the community. This reflects what the BN president (previously) said about a winnable, acceptable and likeable (WALI) candidate.

“For me, age is not the main factor, whether young or old. A candidate must be capable of serving the people. It is no use being young and energetic if he is unable to serve the people,” he said.

Onn Hafiz also said that any decision on candidate selection is not made unilaterally, but requires the approval of BN chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, as well as top party leaders.

Meanwhile, he said young voters and first-time voters formed a very important segment in determining the formation of the state government.

“Those aged below 40 make up between 20 and 40 per cent of the population (in Johor), but the majority of our elected representatives have engaged with them, and I believe they understand that we are depending on young voters,” he said.

In this regard, he urged all Johoreans, including those working in Singapore, to exercise their right to vote on July 11.

Onn Hafiz said the state government under his leadership has strived to deliver its best for the people and is ready to continue serving should it be given another mandate to govern Johor.

“As a state that practises democracy, the higher the voter turnout, the better the representation for Johor. I have done my best, and insya-Allah, if given another mandate, we will continue to give our best for Bangsa Johor,” he said.

The Johor state election is scheduled for July 11, with nomination day set for June 27 and early voting on July 7. — Bernama

JOHOR BAHRU, June 18 — Being a party’s ‘poster boy’ or principal campaign figure in an election does not guarantee appointment as menteri besar if the party succeeds in forming the state government, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said.

The Johor caretaker menteri besar said royal consent, particularly from the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim and Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail, is crucial in determining who will lead the state administration.

“As menteri besar, I will naturally be seen as the poster boy.

“But we are clear that regardless of the circumstances, the person who will determine who becomes menteri besar is the Sultan of Johor or the Regent of Johor. The consent of the Johor royal institution is very important,” he said in a special interview with print and online media practitioners at Saujana, his official residence, yesterday.

The ‘poster boy’ strategy is commonly employed during elections to build public confidence and attract voter support for a party’s candidates.

Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz shared advice from the Johor royal institution, urging all parties to observe proper conduct and decorum throughout the campaign period.

He said mutual respect should be practised despite differences in political views and ideologies.

“There is no need for name-calling or insults. Maintain proper manners and decorum. That is Tuanku’s decree,” he said.

In a separate development, Onn Hafiz said feedback from the Johor royal institution and the people served as key benchmarks in assessing the performance of his administration over the past four years.

“For me and the entire (state) exco line-up, I told myself and I told them that the feedback must come from two parties, not even from me. When the people and the royal institution say we are doing a good job, only then will we consider that we have achieved our KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

“But if either the royal institution or the people feel that we are not doing a good job, then to me, we are not doing a good job. So we are always very alert and sensitive to feedback,” he said.

The Johor state election will take place on July 11, with nominations set for June 27. — Bernama

ASHGABAT (Turkmenistan) June 18 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Turkmenistan from June 18 to 19 is highly significant as it is expected not only to create more opportunities for cooperation in the oil and gas sector but also to enhance collaboration in other industries such as transportation, logistics and agriculture between the two countries.

Malaysia’s Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Mohd Suhaimi Ahmad Tajuddin, said the official visit is also expected to provide both sides with opportunities to explore greater cooperation in trade and investment, higher education and tourism, while opening avenues for Malaysian companies to expand exports, particularly in the halal and palm oil industries.

However, he said one of the most important outcomes would involve national oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), which is expected to begin a new chapter and continue its operations in the Central Asian nation, one of the world’s largest oil and gas producers, for another 20 to 25 years through an agreement expected to be signed during the visit.

Mohd Suhaimi said the visit, undertaken at the invitation of Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, also reciprocates the president’s official visit to Malaysia on December 18-19, 2024.

Petronas has been operating in Turkmenistan, known as the “White Marble” country, since 1996 and has invested US$11.8 billion (RM48.2 billion) there, he said.

Last year, Petronas signed a new agreement with the Turkmen government and a new partner, XRG, an international investment subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

“The agreement enables them to continue operating in Turkmenistan for another 20 to 25 years. New opportunities are expected to be discussed by the Prime Minister and the President of Turkmenistan, and the outcomes are expected to be announced by the Prime Minister at a press conference before he departs,” he told Malaysian media covering the visit.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, will be accompanied by Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, Economy Minister Datuk Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, MITI and the Economy Ministry.

The trip marks Anwar’s first official visit to Turkmenistan and the fifth by a Malaysian prime minister.

He is expected to arrive in Ashgabat at 8.30pm local time on June 18 and attend a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora and friends of Malaysia.

Official events on June 19 will begin with a welcoming ceremony hosted by President Berdimuhamedov at the Presidential Palace, followed by a one-on-one meeting, bilateral talks, the signing of a joint statement by both leaders, and an exchange of agreements and memoranda of understanding already concluded by the two governments.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to attend an official luncheon hosted by Berdimuhamedov before performing Friday prayers at the Gypjak Mosque with Turkmenistan’s mufti Yalkap Hojagulyyev and members of the local Muslim community.

He will also attend the Turkmenistan-Malaysia Forum, held in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector, at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan, before holding a press conference with Malaysian media and concluding the visit.

Apart from discussions on oil and gas, the visit is expected to explore investment opportunities in transportation, logistics, textiles and agriculture.

Mohd Suhaimi said Turkmenistan is also interested in cooperating with Malaysia in halal manufacturing, technology-related industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), and digital animation.

There are currently 177 registered Malaysians in Turkmenistan, most of whom are employees of Petronas Carigali Turkmenistan Sdn Bhd, their family members and staff of other international oil and gas companies.

Bilateral trade totalled RM75.8 million (US$17.71 million) last year, with Malaysia recording a trade surplus of RM75.2 million (US$17.58 million).

Malaysia’s main exports were agricultural products, accounting for 68.8 per cent of total exports, particularly coffee, engineering equipment, palm oil and palm oil-based products, and chemical-based products.

With twice-weekly flights between the two countries, Malaysia recorded 10,751 tourist arrivals from Turkmenistan in 2025, up significantly from about 7,545 in 2024 and 1,116 in 2023.

Meanwhile, Turkmenistan Airlines reported a steady flow of around 2,000 Malaysian passengers a month using its services to travel to Jeddah for the umrah pilgrimage. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has expressed confidence in former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan’s ability to lead the Malaysian Media Council (MMC), citing her distinguished judicial record, including notable dissenting judgments on press freedom and constitutional rights.

In a Facebook post, Teo described Nallini as a judge she holds in the highest regard, saying that throughout her distinguished career on the bench, she consistently demonstrated forward-thinking legal acumen and profound humanity.

“In the narrow 4-3 split decision regarding Malaysian citizenship for an illegitimate child (CTBE) born to a Malaysian father and a foreign mother, she penned a moving dissent, advocating for a purposive, compassionate interpretation of constitutional citizenship laws,” she said.

She also highlighted Nallini’s dissenting judgment in a landmark case involving an online news portal, in which she ruled that the portal should not be held liable for comments posted by its subscribers.

Expressing confidence in Nallini’s leadership, Teo said she had no doubt that the council would grow into a robust, independent, self-regulatory body that further elevates and protects the integrity of the media industry.

Teo noted that the Malaysian Media Council was finally established in 2025 after five decades of advocacy, petitions and policy dialogues.

“Journalists play a vital role in our modern society. They are not merely an industry; they are the 4th Estate of democracy.

“Because of this unique position, any state intervention will naturally be perceived as a form of oppression against media freedom. This is exactly why self-regulation is absolutely crucial,” she said.

Nallini was appointed chairperson of the MMC, the self-regulatory body established under the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025.

The council in a statement said Nallini’s appointment was unanimously endorsed by members of the MMC Board at a meeting on May 26. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Two wanted Indian fugitives believed to be involved in a railway track explosion in Patiala, Punjab, on April 27, have been deported to India by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said the deportation followed a request from Indian authorities to locate and detain the two individuals.

He said the operation highlights the close ties and cooperation between Malaysia and India in tackling serious crimes involving regional security.

“This collaboration reflects the continuous commitment of the Royal Malaysia Police in combating transnational crime while strengthening international security synergy,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added the action also shows that Malaysia will not serve as a safe haven for individuals evading the criminal justice system.

Previously, both suspects were wanted by Indian authorities in connection with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast targeting a main railway line in the Patiala district.

The suspects are believed to have entered Malaysia at the end of April and hid in the Klang Valley to avoid detection.

Through intensive intelligence gathering and international information-sharing, the Bukit Aman National Central Bureau/Interpol Division (D12) tracked the suspects’ locations in the federal capital before launching a raid to arrest them. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The public is urged not to be influenced by smear tactics and false information, including the manipulation of posters involving potential DAP candidates for the Johor state election.

Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching said certain parties had deliberately altered the posters, portraying the potential candidates as Muslim women with improperly worn headscarves.

She said the act was intended to instil fear among non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese community, and to discourage them from voting for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Johor state election.

“DAP respects all religions and understands that the headscarf, as part of Muslim women’s attire, should never be trivialised. The dirty tactics of altering these posters are despicable acts that must be rejected,” she said in a Facebook post yesterday.

The Wanita DAP chief stressed that the party has always championed the rights of all Malaysians, irrespective of race, background, region, religion or gender.

The Deputy Communications Minister also said the attempt to tarnish DAP’s image in such a manner not only reflected negative intentions towards the party but also appeared to show a disregard for women.

“Hopefully, voters of all races will reject this act. Let us all choose harmony, unity and peace,” she said.

The Election Commission has set June 27 as nomination day for the Johor state election and July 11 as polling day, following the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly on June 1.

Johor has 56 state seats, with Barisan Nasional (BN) holding 40 seats before the dissolution, followed by PH with 12, Perikatan Nasional (PN) with three, and Muda with one. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — PAS has not reached any decision on the latest developments in Perikatan Nasional (PN), its information chief said today.

Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said various issues, including current developments within PN, were discussed during the party meeting, but no announcement would be made at this stage, Harian Metro reported.

“All decisions will be announced through a media statement. So there is nothing to announce from this meeting for now,” he told reporters after attending an opposition meeting yesterday.

He said several more internal discussions would be held before any decision is finalised.

Responding to comments by Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Tuesday, Ahmad Fadhli said all parties have the right to contest in a democratic system.

“In this democratic country, all parties can contest,” he said.

However, he added that any party wishing to use the PN logo must obtain the signature of the PN chairman, as required in the letter to the Election Commission.

He said the possibility of clashes between parties is not unusual if negotiations fail to reach consensus.

“In a democracy, we are ready to face anyone if there are no prior negotiations.

“If consensus fails, clashes may happen. Consensus may succeed or fail.

“There is still time, but if there is a desire to contest, all parties can contest,” he said.

He also rejected suggestions that his remarks on contest rights would worsen ties between PAS and Bersatu.

“I don’t think it worsens the situation. We have faced various parties before and it was not a problem,” he said.

Ahmad Fadhli also confirmed that issues involving Bersatu and PN were among matters discussed in the meeting, as part of current political developments.

“We always discuss current issues because this is a political party meeting, not a Maghrib lecture.

“Issues about Bersatu, PN and others are discussed from time to time,” he said.

He also confirmed that the PAS president chaired the meeting held earlier in the day.
